GENERAL INFORMATION

The Toronto Transit Commission serves Toronto's 244 sq. mi./632 sq. km area with over 2,500 buses, streetcars, subway and RT cars operating on approximately 3,900 miles/6,300 km of routes. More than 1,218 million passengers use the system on working days. The 1997 annual total was 380 million rides. The subway is the backbone of the system. All surface routes (except route 99) make 229 connections with the subway and RT.

On buses and streetcars remember to stand behind the white line when the vehicle is in motion. Move to the rear and stay clear of the doors. To tell the driver you want to get off at the next stop, pull the cord overhead, or push the button, as soon as the vehicle leaves the previous stop. When leaving streetcars, look to the right before stepping into the street.

DWA (Designated Waiting Area)

PASSENGER SAFETY

As "Your Safety Partner" we want you to know that if there is an emergency - fire, sickness, accident, harassment or any other problem - help is always nearby. The "helping hand" decal identifies the various safety features in the system.

Every subway and RT car is equipped with a yellow alarm strip. Simply press it to signal the train crew that there is an emergency. The crew will arrange for assistance at the next station.

Bus and streetcar drivers also have alarm systems in each vehicle to summon assistance, and all buses and streetcars have two-way radios.

When boarding trains, always wait for people inside to exit before you enter. Three chimes sound before the train doors close. Immediately after a subway train leaves the station, the name of the next station is called out over the trains public address system. Stations are designed with security mirrors, intercoms and closed-circuit cameras to minimize security hazards.

Telephones in all subway and RT stations do not require coins to reach the "9-1-1" emergency number.

ON-STREET INFORMATION

Schedules are posted at most transfer locations throughout the system and provide location and route maps. TTC Yellow Pages TimeLine phone numbers, plus travel tips.

GO TRANSIT

SERVICES

GO Transit is the interregional transit system that links Toronto with the surrounding regions. GO Trains and GO Buses serve an 8,000 square kilometre area radiating from downtown Toronto as far west as Hamilton, Barrie in the north, and the Oshawa area in the east. GO Transit connects with most municipal transit systems in the Greater Toronto Area, including the TTC.

FOR WORK OR PLAY

GO service is great for getting to work, to the game, the show, or the big race. Toronto's Union Station is within walking distance of downtown attractions at the Metro Convention Centre and SkyDome, including Blue Jays games. Lakeshore trains also serve Exhibition Place, ideal for getting to shows and major attractions like the Canadian National Exhibition and Ontario Place.

NO SMOKING, PLEASE

Smoking is not permitted on trains, buses, in stations, or in platform shelters.

LOST AND FOUND

Articles found on GO Trains and GO Buses are brought to the lost and found office in the GO concourse at Union Station, telephone (416) 327-9444.

FARES

Fares are charged by the fare zone distance travelled and the category of the passenger (adult, senior citizen, child under five years, child under 12 years, student with valid GO Transit ID card).

Handy for combined GO and TTC travel is the adult Twinn Pass, sold at a discount and only available from GO Transit. Exact cash fares are charged on the Yonge C and Bayview buses between north Toronto and Richmond Hill. GST is included in GO fares.

ON YOUR HONOR

GO Train service works on an honor fare system. Passengers do not have to show their ticket or pass to an attendant before boarding the GO Train, but must have their proof of fare payment available for spot inspections by our transit enforcement officers or other proper authority. On the GO Bus, passengers must show their ticket or pass to the driver on boarding and exiting, and have proof of fare payment handy for fare inspection.

BUYING TICKETS

GO tickets and passes can be purchased at GO stations, terminals, and agencies. Tickets can be purchased with VISA, MasterCard or debit card at all train stations and some bus terminals. One-way tickets and day passes are available from your GO Bus driver at the time of travel.

TTC TIMES TWO

Passengers who ride the TTC immediately before and after a GO Train or GO Bus trip can use the TTC transfer from their first ride to board the second TTC vehicle.

GO ONE BETTER

We offer a special incentive to weekend riders. If you are an adult monthly passholder, you can travel with a companion - and the companion rides free. You can "GO one better" on Saturdays, Sundays and most statutory holidays.

YOU'RE CONNECTED

You can always connect with family, friends, or colleagues while on the GO Train. There's a mobile phone in every railcar. The phones are easy to use with a major credit card or special GO telecard.

SAFETY FIRST

We're proud of our record of safety and reliability, on GO Buses and GO Trains. GO Bus drivers and equipment staff have won provincial, national, and international safety awards. On the trains, a host of security features helps keep passengers safe: yellow alarm strips above the windows can be pressed for assistance, and riders can walk between cars, even if the train is moving, On the train platform, passengers must always stay behind the yellow line in case of high-speed trains passing through the station.
