B.C. college abruptly closed
Foreign students no longer in program are afraid they could be sent home
British Columbia has nearly 600 career-training institutes similar to the closed Vancouver college. Many are geared to foreign students, particularly from Asia. Legislation that protects students if an institution folds is enforced by a provincial agency. By midmorning, a provincial representative had arrived at the college to speak with students.

Flyover, flyover
Says Hazel Siromoni, director-educational projects in India, Canadian Education Centre: “All kinds of colleges from Canada are coming to India. It’s a mix of universities (large, mid-size and small), university colleges, colleges (public and private) and even secondary schools. The volume of interest has increased tremendously in the last 5 years.” In 2004-05, 15,000 Indian students went to study in the UK.

How computers make our kids stupid
At school, the economists found, some exposure to computers seems beneficial. For instance, students who never or rarely use the Internet and computers in the classroom don't do as well as those who make moderate use of them. But the difference in achievement levels is significant in math and science only, not in reading. And those same computer-less students outperform peers who frequently access the technology.
